The McLaren driver started from pole position, briefly lost the lead at the Hungaroring, but managed to regain the front and crossed the finish line first, ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli.
With an impressive pace and having received the checkered flag with a 15-second advantage over the Red Bull driver, the 2025 F1 champion was happy with what he delivered. “What pleases me the most? Simply the fact that we were so fast, the fact that the car was, of course, very strong today. I was very happy with several things. The car was still horrible to drive at times, but fast; and I’d rather have a horrible car, but fast, than anything else,” he said.

“The pace, the pace I kept throughout the race, even behind Oscar at the start. Of course, I didn’t make the best turn 2, but after that, seeing how my performance was, I realized I was better in every way, both in terms of degradation and pace. I was convinced I could still win the race, even after that, whether by stopping in the pits or forcing him to stop while I extended my stint, then getting new tires and climbing through the field,” he continued.
“So, I was convinced I could win today, and we did. Of course, it was a pity for him and a matter of bad luck, because I think we could have done a one-two. We were on another level today, and I felt I was in a very good rhythm. When the car is good and I’m in a good rhythm, no one can hold me back,” he concluded.
