Mercedes has defined a specific strategy for the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season. James Allison explained why the team chose to contain the pace of updates to the W17 early in the year, and intends to seek greater gains later on.

This decision was possible thanks to the performance advantage the car showed from the first race. While Ferrari and Red Bull Racing have already directed a significant portion of their resources to developments, Mercedes adopted a more gradual approach, planning development to preserve its competitiveness when rivals close the gap.
Allison explained that the team worked later on developing the initial version of the W17 to ensure a strong car from the start of the season: “We did everything we could to launch a strong car early in the year. One of the things in our development strategy was to make the internal decision, both on the aerodynamic side and the bodywork, to leave that for later than we had done with any car before,” he said.
According to Mercedes’ technical director, other teams completed their initial projects earlier, and therefore were able to start developing the first updates before Mercedes. However, his team decided not to immediately react to every new development from rivals and to keep its own schedule.

“Our strategy is simply to try to keep the nose ahead and ensure that the next performance package we deliver restores the previous status quo. We just have to get through those scary moments when others bring all their new and sophisticated parts,” Allison added.
The director also highlighted the dilemma about when to stop developing the current car to focus resources on next year’s project. Despite the risk that an early switch could allow rivals to advance, Allison said Mercedes has already found performance in the wind tunnel and still has upgrades that have not yet reached the track. For him, the available potential, combined with the points advantage built, can keep the team ahead, provided the new parts are introduced without reliability issues or other errors that marked part of the first half of the season.
