During the first phase of qualifying, Q1, while on his first attempt at a fast lap, the four-time champion lost the car and hit the wall. This damaged the car and the driver did not continue in the session, starting only in 20th.

Speaking to GPblog, the Dutchman stated that “I just stepped on the accelerator and the entire rear axle locked up completely, which is very strange, I’ve never experienced that in my whole life.”

The damaged Red Bull Racing RB22 of Max Verstappen (NLD), who crashed during qualifying.

Later in the weekend, the French executive explained more about the crash, seeing a series of factors as the cause of the problem.
