Formula 1 has once again been stirred by rumors involving Max Verstappen and a possible move to McLaren in 2027. When questioned about the matter during the Belgian GP weekend, Andrea Stella avoided putting an end to the speculation definitively.

The British team’s boss responded in a relaxed tone but left room for new interpretations. Amid the talks circulating since the Austrian GP, his statement drew attention precisely because it did not represent a categorical denial.
These rumors began after reports of informal contacts between Verstappen and McLaren during the Austrian round weekend, something acknowledged by the team itself. At Spa-Francorchamps, the presence of Jos Verstappen and manager Raymond Vermeulen in McLaren’s hospitality area further fueled the comments, although the visit was related to McLaren development program driver Dries van Langendonck, who is also linked to the Verstappen Racing team.
The possibility of Verstappen occupying one of McLaren’s cars also sparked speculation about Oscar Piastri’s future. The Australian’s manager, former F1 driver Mark Webber, emphatically denied any scenario in which his client would need to leave the team to make room for the Dutchman.
After the qualifying session at Spa, Stella was asked if he could end the rumors by confirming that there are no talks between McLaren representatives and Verstappen. The executive replied: “I have said before that we are talking about a four-time world champion. It will always be a fascinating opportunity, but we would need to introduce a third car,” he stated.

Then, the Italian maintained a humorous tone: “You don’t need to talk to me. We have to go to a higher political level and, when we are in a position to do that, we will consider that option,” he said, referring to the fact that Formula 1 has no plans to allow a third car per team.
Verstappen, for his part, continues to adopt the same reserved stance as in previous years. When asked again about his future at Spa, he answered directly: “No.” When asked about the speculation, he added: “Nothing.” And when hearing a mention about commitment to Red Bull, he interrupted: “I said there is nothing to say,” he concluded bluntly.
Despite having a contract with Red Bull Racing until the end of 2028, the Dutchman’s future remains surrounded by doubts. His current seventh position in the championship may allow the use of an exit clause, keeping the discussion open about a possible change in Formula 1 in the coming years.
