F1: McLaren advances in unprecedented sustainable car project

McLaren announced new advances in its project to develop a ‘circular’ car in Formula 1, an initiative that aims to reduce waste and decrease environmental impact during the production of the category’s cars. The British team presented a plan considered unprecedented within the sport, to expand the use of sustainable processes in its future projects.

The concept of a ‘circular’ car, which involves the reuse of materials, mentioned by McLaren, is linked to the reuse of materials and the elimination of excesses in the manufacturing process. The idea is to redesign from development to the reuse of components, creating a more efficient and environmentally responsible model.

In partnership with Google and Deloitte, the team produced a strategic roadmap aimed at building this new concept of Formula 1 car. According to McLaren, the goal is to completely rethink the way cars are designed, manufactured, and reused throughout the production cycle.

The team also presented figures related to the sustainability program implemented in 2025. According to the report released by McLaren Racing, there was a 14% reduction in total waste generation, as well as a 40% drop in the disposal of hazardous waste related to the manufacturing of composite components compared to 2024.

The document also highlighted that McLaren maintained 22% circularity in the production of the chassis of its Formula 1 car. Among the measures adopted are the use of recycled metals, bio-based materials, recycling of general waste, and reuse of liquids considered hazardous.

Beyond the work directly related to the cars, McLaren has also been expanding sustainable technology projects off the track. Through the Accelerator program, the team continues collaborating with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation on initiatives aimed at restoring coral reefs in Australia.

The team developed the OSCAR system, an acronym for Coral Assembly and Restoration Operating System, capable of using robotics to accelerate the production of structures used in coral treatment. The equipment reduced production time from 90 to 10 seconds per unit, allowing the annual manufacturing to increase from 100,000 to over one million pieces.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown highlighted the importance of sustainable initiatives amid the global growth of Formula 1: “As our sport continues to grow around the world, it is even more important that we work hard to reduce our impact on the planet. I am also excited about the work we are doing with Deloitte and Google to continue our mission of building a fully ‘circular’ Formula 1 car,” Brown concluded.
