The decisions of the sporting stewards at the Belgian GP are expected to dominate conversations between drivers and the FIA during the Formula 1 Hungarian GP weekend. The cases involving Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have reignited the debate about consistency in rule application and will be at the center of an already scheduled meeting between category representatives and competitors.

The two incidents, which occurred at Spa-Francorchamps, raised questions about the interpretation of the FIA International Sporting Code and the Driving Standards Guidelines. The objective of the meeting will be to seek greater clarity on how these documents are applied in different race situations.
Leclerc escaped punishment after a touch with Oscar Piastri during the battle for third position. The stewards understood that the Australian did not have real conditions to complete the overtake and concluded that there was no need for additional measures, despite the contact between Ferrari and McLaren.
After the race, Piastri expressed surprise at the decision: “I really don’t know where I was supposed to go,” said the driver, referring to the moment he was next to the white line on the left side of the track while sharing space with the Monegasque.
The main reason for controversy revolves around the stewards’ understanding of the space Leclerc should have left when returning to the ideal racing line. The International Sporting Code stipulates that a driver returning to the racing line after defending a position must leave at least a car’s width to the edge of the track, something many argue did not happen.

Hamilton, on the other hand, received a five-second penalty for the incident with George Russell on the first lap. The seven-time champion was involved in a touch with his former teammate after the Mercedes driver experienced power unit energy deployment issues.
“That was a racing incident, so obviously I don’t think it should have been a penalty, but it is what it is,” Hamilton stated. The stewards, however, considered that the Briton should have anticipated the loss of front grip and left more space for Russell.
Although the results of the investigations and penalties are unlikely to be changed, the expectation is that the meeting in Hungary will help establish clearer and more consistent criteria for the rest of the season. The meeting between the FIA and drivers was already scheduled before the events in Spa but gained additional importance after the controversies involving Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren.
