The FIA spoke out after the final decision on the result of the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula 1. The entity confirmed that it will review procedures related to the timing system and the category’s judicial processes.

This controversy began right after the race, held in the Principality in early June, when Alpine filed a protest against two five-second penalties applied to Pierre Gasly. An anomaly in the timing system at the pit entry had caused similar penalties for several drivers, but Gasly was the only one who did not serve his penalty during the race.
With this, Alpine was able to appeal later, and the stewards decided in favor of the driver, returning Gasly to third place. McLaren and Red Bull Racing contested the decision, in a protest reviewed at the end of August, with the result being announced this Friday (04), which resulted in the reapplication of the penalties and Gasly dropping again to seventh position.

According to the FIA, the evidence presented to the stewards and that analyzed in court were quite different, mainly due to the broader legal involvement in the judicial process. Still, the entity stated that it intends to use the case to improve its own procedures: “The FIA is reviewing the methodology and operation of the current Formula 1 timing system and related regulatory issues,” the entity said in a statement.
The FIA also informed that it will analyze other judicial procedures, including the right of review and appeal processes. The organization also reinforced its confidence in the work of the stewards and the independence of the different panels responsible for decisions: “Stewards’ decisions are made in a different environment from that of the Court, which has access to additional and extensive legal participation, arguments, and evidence,” concludes the FIA statement.
