The FIA has confirmed a significant change to Formula 1 regulations for 2027, following discussions that had been ongoing for some time. The change directly affects future power units and seeks to address criticisms made by most drivers in the early months of the current season.

These complaints primarily focused on the importance that the electrical component has gained in car performance. Several drivers argued that performance became excessively dependent on managing available energy, reducing the direct influence of skill in certain situations.
According to the FIA, the proposed modifications aim to make qualifying laps more aggressive and with greater continuous use of the cars’ potential. At the same time, the entity emphasized that it intends to preserve the positive and exciting race characteristics envisioned by the new technical rules.
The main change for 2027 will be the increased participation of the internal combustion engine in the total power division. According to the presented plan, this part of the power unit will deliver 420 kW, accompanied by a 5% increase in the permitted fuel flow.

Meanwhile, the battery’s contribution will be reduced to 300 kW. In compensation, drivers will have more energy recovery capacity available during laps, with the regeneration system increasing to 350 kW. In practice, this difference means 58% combustion power and 42% electrical power, different from the current 53%/47%.

The changes don’t stop there. The FIA also confirmed a new evolution for 2028, further expanding the role of the internal combustion engine. At this stage, the power of this part of the unit will be raised to 450 kW, while the fuel flow will receive a 13% increase.
The electrical component will continue to provide 300 kW in 2028. On the other hand, the energy recovery capacity will be expanded again, reaching 400 kW, reinforcing the importance of energy efficiency without it representing the largest share of available power. With this change for 2028, the power proportion will become 60% for combustion and 40% for electrical.
Although the agreement has already been reached between the teams, the changes still depend on formal approval from the FIA. The proposal will be forwarded to the World Motor Sport Council on June 23, a necessary step for the definitive officialization of the new technical regulations.
