Mercedes is once again a protagonist in Formula 1 in 2026, after a period away from the top positions. For the experienced engineer in the category, Rob Smedley, the team’s reaction is directly linked to the difficulties faced in recent years.

The German team started the current season on a high, with three victories in the first three races, recovering the consistency that had disappeared between 2022 and 2025. In that interval, the team failed to maintain the dominance that marked the category’s previous era.
Smedley, who closely followed Mercedes’ performance during his work at Williams, pointed out that prolonged success may have led to overconfidence: “They had won so many titles that perhaps there was unnecessary self-confidence. That’s dangerous, because you start to believe you can dominate any situation,” he stated.

According to him, the period of difficulties played a fundamental role in changing the team’s attitude: “I think going through a phase where you get beaten up does a lot of good. It brings humility and completely changes the way you approach work,” he added.
Mercedes faced significant problems at the beginning of the previous technical cycle, until 2025, including difficulties with the ‘porpoising’ effect and limitations in aerodynamic development. For Smedley, this scenario served as an important warning, leading the team to readjust its approach and refocus to return to the top of the grid this year with the new regulations.
