Aston Martin has once again become the subject of speculation in Formula 1 following rumors involving Jonathan Wheatley. The team has not confirmed any negotiations, but has also not ruled out the possibility of the now former Audi team principal joining the British team in the future.

With Wheatley’s unexpected departure from Audi, announced about a week ago for ‘personal reasons’, this has intensified speculation about his next destination. The 58-year-old executive’s name has been linked to Aston Martin, especially to take on the role of team principal, currently held by Adrian Newey.
According to speculation, Wheatley’s arrival would allow Newey to focus exclusively on his initial role as technical-managing partner. However, Aston Martin has avoided confirming any moves, reinforcing that its current structure remains unchanged.
Pedro de la Rosa, the team’s representative and former F1 driver, commented on the matter in an interview with Sky Sports F1 and highlighted confidence in the current model: “At the moment, regarding our structure, we are happy with what we have and with the way we organize the team, with Adrian being the team principal,” he stated.
De la Rosa also reinforced Newey’s expanded role within Aston Martin: “But he is more than a team principal. In fact, he is the technical-managing partner. So that will remain the same,” he added, signaling that there are no planned changes at the moment.

When directly addressing Wheatley’s situation, the team representative exercised caution: “Jonathan left Audi. We shouldn’t comment on things that are happening. We don’t know why he left. We don’t know the situation,” he stated.
When asked about the possibility of Wheatley joining Aston Martin, which would confirm the rumors in the paddock, De la Rosa responded directly, but without closing the door: “Not for now. We shouldn’t comment on rumors and speculation, because we need to respect what Jonathan wants to do in the future,” he concluded.
Although the British team maintains a cautious stance on the matter, the possibility of a change is not completely ruled out. Should Wheatley decide to move to another team, he may still have to serve a contractual standoff period before taking on a new role in Formula 1 (the so-called ‘gardening leave’), which keeps the scenario open for future developments.
