Formula 1 has seen McLaren return to the top recently after some difficult years, and the team’s CEO, Zak Brown, revealed that this recovery was mainly guided by deep internal changes.

The executive pointed out that the recent success, with titles won in the last two seasons, originated from a restructuring initiated back in 2016. During that period, the team faced technical problems and a worn-out internal environment.
According to Brown, the biggest turnaround came not only from on-track performance but from the organizational culture: “The biggest change was in people and culture, by far. When I arrived, the environment was bleak, it wasn’t a happy place, neither for drivers, nor for partners, nor for most of the team,” he stated. He highlighted that there was widespread demotivation and even internal divisions.

From then on, the leadership promoted a complete overhaul, seeking to integrate all departments and value collective work. Brown highlighted that there was available talent, but direction and motivation were lacking: “There was a lot of talent here, it was about unlocking that, bringing motivation, enthusiasm, and making the environment lighter,” he added.
Another central point was to eliminate the separation between sectors within the team, creating a sense of joint participation in the results. Brown mentioned that even off-track areas began to feel part of the performance: “When everyone understands their role in on-track success, it creates an incredible environment,” concluded the McLaren CEO.
