Formula 1 could return to Argentina after nearly three decades, and Buenos Aires authorities will take a new step in negotiations in the coming weeks. A delegation will travel to the Miami GP to present the progress of the circuit works and discuss a possible return to the calendar with the category.

The country has not hosted a race since 1998, but the goal now is to be ready if an opportunity arises from 2027 onwards. The focus of the authorities is to demonstrate that the project for the Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez has advanced significantly and that the city is prepared to host Formula 1 again.
Representatives of the Buenos Aires government, alongside local promoter Grupo OSD, will participate in the Miami GP weekend for meetings with Liberty Media executives. The goal will be to present the progress achieved since the first meeting held last year.
The sports secretary of Buenos Aires, Fabian Turnes, stated that the requirements demanded by the category are being met: “We are meeting all the established requirements, from formal aspects to technical and operational ones, working with our consulting group Tilke, recommended by Liberty itself,” he stated.
According to Turnes, the project has evolved significantly since the first meeting: “Our first meeting took place a year ago in Miami. Since then, there has been significant progress and now we can show something tangible, that the circuit is under construction. It is no longer just an ambition,” he said.
The modernization plan for the racetrack is divided into two phases, the first focused on MotoGP and the second on Formula 1. The stage dedicated to the top category of motorsport foresees the extension of the track to nearly five kilometers, compared to the 4,3 km initially planned.

Still, there is the possibility of bringing forward this expansion to demonstrate the project’s commitment to Formula 1. The intention is to ensure that the circuit is ready if a spot opens up on the calendar, especially considering that some current contracts are nearing their end.
Turnes also mentioned the international scenario as a possible factor that could open up opportunities: “We know that several contracts on the current calendar are coming to an end. There is also the global context, which could open a window,” he stated, citing the impact of the conflict in the Middle East that has already led to the cancellation of the races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia this year.
Despite this, the official considers 2028 a more realistic goal: “It’s hard to set a date. Personally, I see 2027 as more challenging, but 2028 is not that far away,” he added.
Another important factor for the project is the presence of Franco Colapinto in Formula 1. The Argentine driver is expected to perform a demonstration with a car from the category on the streets of Buenos Aires in the coming weeks, an event that could reinforce the category’s interest.
“From the beginning, Franco’s visit was planned for before or after Miami. Now we will have this opportunity before the meeting, what is strategic for us. This, along with the progress of the works, will show Argentina’s passion for Formula 1,” Turnes concluded.
