Formula 1 begins the 2026 season in Melbourne with unexpected challenges for some teams, and Fernando Alonso already admits he could retire from the Australian GP if any problem arises with his car. The Spaniard stated that Aston Martin’s priority at this start of the championship is to preserve components for the next stages.

The conservative strategy reflects the delicate moment experienced by the team, which faces parts limitations right at the season opener. With the Chinese GP happening as early as next week, Alonso made it clear that the team does not intend to take unnecessary risks during the race at Albert Park.
Even with the difficulties faced by Aston Martin throughout the weekend, the two-time world champion managed to minimize the damage in qualifying. Alonso finished the session in 17th position and, at least, avoided starting from the very back of the grid.
The situation was even more complicated for his teammate. The other Aston Martin car did not even take to the track in qualifying and, therefore, will occupy the last position on the starting grid for this Sunday’s race.
After the session that defined the grid, Alonso explained that the team will adopt an extremely cautious approach during the race. According to him, the current state of the equipment requires constant attention to any sign of mechanical problems.
“We will monitor the situation lap by lap,” the Spaniard stated. He also reinforced that the team is fully aware of the limitations at this start of the championship.

“As Adrian (Newey) said yesterday, we are short on parts. It’s no secret to anyone, and we already have the China race next week,” the driver explained.
Given this scenario, Alonso indicated that the priority will be to complete as many laps as possible without compromising the equipment. However, he made it clear that the team will not hesitate to end the race if any more serious risk arises.
“I hope we can complete as many laps as possible, maybe even almost the entire race,” he said. “But at the first sign that something might be wrong, we cannot continue running until we cause greater damage and compromise the next race.”
The statement reveals the level of caution adopted by Aston Martin at this start of the Formula 1 season. With limited resources and a rapid sequence of races on the calendar, the team seeks to avoid major problems that could compromise its performance in the following stages.
Therefore, Alonso stated that it will be necessary to maintain strategic flexibility throughout the race in Melbourne. “We will need to be very flexible,” the Spaniard concluded, indicating that any decision during the race will depend directly on the car’s behavior lap after lap.
