Mercedes turned the 2026 Formula 1 regulation change into an opportunity to regain prominence in the category. James Allison, the team’s technical director, stated that work on the new generation of cars began years earlier and was planned to create an advantage that could last several seasons.

After eleven rounds held this year, the strategy has shown significant results. Mercedes leads both championships, has eight wins and ten poles, and holds a 72-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship.
The performance represents a significant recovery after four difficult seasons under the ground effect regulation, which was introduced in 2022. During this period, the team achieved only seven wins in 92 races and went the entire 2023 season without winning.
Allison explained that Mercedes identified the regulation change as an opportunity capable of redefining the category’s hierarchy: “One of the messages we have repeated internally for several years is that regulation changes of this magnitude can define success for several seasons. The team that gets it right early can potentially build a long-term advantage, so we have been approaching 2026 with this in mind for a long time,” he said.

The W17 confirmed expectations already in the first round, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli achieving a one-two finish in Australia. Antonelli also secured five consecutive wins between China and Monaco, while currently leading the drivers’ championship with 219 points, 50 ahead of Lewis Hamilton, with Russell in third, with 160.
Despite the dominant start, Allison stated that the calendar’s pace did not allow the team to fully capitalize on the momentum: “Arriving in Melbourne with a truly competitive car was extremely satisfying. At the same time, Formula 1 does not let you stop to enjoy it. You immediately move on to the next race, the next challenge, and the next opportunity,” he added.
According to the technical director, this dynamic sums up Mercedes’ season so far. The team has focused its efforts on executing each round as best as possible and leveraging the work done in preparation for the new era.
