Audi wants the next generation of Formula 1 engines to preserve one of its main pillars: efficiency. Mattia Binotto stated that, even with discussions to simplify power units from 2031 onwards, the German manufacturer considers it essential to maintain technologies that can be applied to road cars.

In an interview with Motorsport.com, Audi’s CEO in F1 commented on the debate between the FIA and manufacturers about the future engine regulations. Currently, there is a consensus among the six power unit manufacturers around adopting simpler and cheaper V8 engines, with a reduced electric portion and the use of advanced sustainable fuels.
For Binotto, efficiency must continue to be a central element of the category. “Audi has always advocated the importance of efficiency. The technology that allows building highly efficient engines is the same that is later applied to production cars. When we talk about efficiency, we are talking about fuel consumption, emissions, and technology transfer between motorsport and road vehicles,” he said.

The executive highlighted that the challenge will be to balance performance and simplicity in the new regulation. “The real challenge will be understanding how to design a Formula 1 engine that remains highly efficient but, at the same time, is less complex, lighter, and more affordable. That is what we will have to face,” he added.
Binotto also commented on the FIA’s role in the negotiations to define the future of the category. According to him, the goal should be to find a solution that meets the interests of all involved. “I think the FIA, as the regulatory body, has the role of leading this discussion. Formula 1 needs the manufacturers, just as the manufacturers need Formula 1. In the end, as has always happened, we will have to find a solution that is not just a compromise but the best possible for everyone,” he concluded.
