The incident occurred at turn 18, with just over 10 minutes remaining in the session. Leclerc, who led the practice in front of his home crowd, was deemed responsible for impeding the Racing Bulls driver. According to the FIA (International Automobile Federation), the investigation analyzed positioning data, radio communications, videos, and onboard footage. The report indicated that the problem arose from a misunderstanding between Leclerc and his race engineer, Bryan Bozzi.

“As car 30 approached car 16, the team informed the driver of car 16 ‘3 seconds to Bearman, 5 seconds to Lawson’. This was accurate information. However, the driver of car 16 reasonably assumed that this meant there was a 5-second gap between Bearman and Lawson, when in fact the gap was only 2 seconds. This misunderstanding was responsible for the unnecessary impeding.”
