During the weekend in Montreal, the four-time world champion made his frustration public by saying that the team had chosen to follow a direction he did not agree with. After qualifying, he stated how he did not want to adopt the approach, but they were convinced it would work – and it did not.

“Max did not hold back. He said: ‘I told them everything is wrong.’ You can also tell there are tensions. In a way, I think it’s good that he showed what he thinks and shared everything like that, but actually this should stay internal. Still, I found the weekend itself quite calm,” he said.

“His first task now is to get the car back on track. The team should listen to him, since they didn’t this time, so he has every chance to show all of us – but mainly himself and the team – that his proposals work, so he can get back to the front,” he added.
