Formula 1 returns this weekend for the Canadian GP in Montreal, with pressure mounting on George Russell. The Mercedes driver arrives at the Canadian stage 20 points behind his teammate, the young Kimi Antonelli, leader of the standings after an impressive sequence of results at the start of the 2026 championship.

Pointed out as a favorite for the title since the pre-season tests, Russell saw Antonelli take the spotlight by winning the last three races, all starting from pole position. At 19 years old, the Italian became the youngest leader in Formula 1 history. Even so, Russell avoids talking about pressure. The Brit attributes part of his recent results to technical problems, bad luck, and unfavorable track characteristics, especially in Miami:
“I just struggle on these low-grip circuits, like here [in Miami], Zandvoort, and Brazil. It was the same last year,” the driver said.
Montreal, however, emerges as an opportunity for a comeback. Russell won the 2025 Canadian GP after starting from pole position and considers the circuit one of his favorites: “I love this circuit, to be honest. You know, the bumps, the curbs, the walls – there’s a lot of character here. The fans are always amazing and give us a lot of energy,” he told TSN last year.

Besides the internal battle, Mercedes also faces the evolution of McLaren and Red Bull. Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Max Verstappen showed strength in Miami, increasing the pressure on the German team.
To try to react, Mercedes is preparing important updates for Montreal, including aerodynamic changes and adjustments at the starts. Behind the scenes, however, rumors involving a possible Verstappen move to the team continue to increase the pressure on Russell.
