Mark Rushbrook, Ford’s global racing director, described the FIA’s (International Automobile Federation) decision to revise the Formula 1 power unit regulations for 2027 as “a good step.” The change alters the split between the combustion engine and electric power, shifting from nearly 50/50 to about 60/40, reducing reliance on electrification.

The current setup had been criticized throughout the 2026 season. Drivers complained about slower qualifying laps and strategies focused on battery management. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen was one of the most critical, stating that the format harms wheel-to-wheel battles.
“It is natural for stakeholders to express their opinions and for decision-makers to make their decisions,” Rushbrook told The Athletic. “But I believe this is a good step to help the racing and the product on track.”
The revision comes as teams are still adapting to the new power units introduced this season. Ford’s partner, Red Bull, had a difficult start in 2026, with Verstappen achieving only a fifth place as his best result in the first four rounds.

Still, Rushbrook praised the project’s progress and highlighted the challenge of competing against experienced manufacturers like Ferrari and Mercedes. The executive also noted Red Bull’s recovery last year, when Verstappen came within two points of a fifth consecutive title after initial difficulties with the RB21.
“We know it will take a lot of work to get there,” he said. “That is part of the reason why we partnered with Red Bull. They are natural competitors, committed to winning.”
