The future of Max Verstappen in Formula 1 remains surrounded by doubts, and David Coulthard believes that Ferrari would be a better fit for the four-time world champion than Mercedes. The former driver stated that the environment of the Italian team would suit the Dutchman’s profile more if he decides to change teams in the coming years.
Verstappen’s situation gained even more attention after Red Bull’s difficult start in 2026. The new technical regulations of the category, especially the power split between combustion and electric energy, have been a frequent target of criticism from the driver since the pre-season tests.
Even after rule changes introduced for the Miami weekend, Verstappen continued to show dissatisfaction with the current cars. Amid this scenario, speculation about a possible departure from Red Bull increased, including rumors of retirement at the end of the season or a transfer to another team.
Mercedes is often linked to the Dutchman’s name, mainly due to the close relationship Verstappen maintains with the German manufacturer. The driver will even use a Mercedes in his participation in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Still, Coulthard believes that Ferrari would offer a more comfortable environment for the current champion.
“I think Max fits better in the world of Ferrari than in Mercedes,” said the Scot on the Up To Speed podcast. “I know there is a good relationship with Mercedes and that he races with one of their cars in GT3 events, but the freedom to be Max would be greater at Ferrari,” he explained.
For Coulthard, the routine in Maranello would perfectly suit Verstappen’s style. “He would simply arrive, drive fast, probably win races, and then go home,” concluded the former Formula 1 driver.
