F1: Ferrari exhaust system may be banned by FIA

The FIA is considering banning the concept of the ‘blown’ exhaust, introduced by Ferrari from the 2027 Formula 1 season, according to information from motorsport.com.br. The discussion gained momentum after several teams adopted similar interpretations of the regulations, increasing the impact of the solution on the grid. The Federation fears a rise in technical complexity and a significant increase in costs.

Six teams arrived at the Miami GP with versions inspired by the concept, taking advantage of a more flexible reading of article C3.9.2. Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull Racing, Alpine, Williams, and Cadillac adapted the exhaust mount to act as an aerodynamic profile, directing hot gases and improving the performance of the rear wing and diffuser.

Ferrari, however, went further by integrating the system into the rear design of the SF-26, with a flap positioned behind the exhaust. The solution required structural changes, such as repositioning the differential in the gearbox, allowing better exploitation of regulatory limits.

Even though there is a cost in terms of engine power, the aerodynamic advantage can reach up to half a second per lap. Still, the FIA considers that the evolution of this concept could undesirably increase expenses and technical complexity.

Since it cannot unilaterally change the regulations without a safety justification, the entity intends to bring the topic for discussion with the teams’ technical directors. To approve the ban, a qualified majority will be required.
