The FIA has announced important changes to the Formula 1 rules, which come into effect at the Miami GP this coming weekend. The main news is the ban on the use of the ‘boost’ mode in wet track conditions.

This decision reinforces the focus on safety after recent risk situations, especially due to the speed difference when cars approach each other. The measure aims to prevent accidents like the one that occurred in Suzuka, involving Franco Colapinto and Oliver Bearman.
The ‘boost’ mode had already received a limit of 150 extra horsepower during races, but it will now be completely blocked in low grip conditions with a wet track. The updated regulation makes it clear that ‘the system (boost) will be inhibited and not allowed’ in these situations. Additionally, the entity also revised the use of the so-called straight mode, which reduces aerodynamic drag by opening the front and rear wings.

With the new guidelines, in low grip conditions, drivers will only be able to use a partial activation of the system in specific zones. Another relevant change involves a new mechanism to prevent cars that stop on the starting grid from becoming targets of collisions from other competitors coming from the back of the grid.
The FIA single-seater director, Nikolas Tombazis, highlighted that drivers had an active role in the discussions: “Many asked for changes in the qualifying sessions to be able to push more and make better use of the cars,” he said. He also emphasized that safety concerns were decisive for the decisions adopted before the weekend in Miami.
