Gianpiero Lambiase’s move to McLaren had the approval of Max Verstappen. The engineer, known as GP, will leave Red Bull in 2027 and take on the role of Racing Director at Zak Brown’s team in 2028.

According to Verstappen, the proposal was discussed between the two before the decision. In an interview with Viaplay, the four-time world champion said: “He told me what kind of offer he had received. I said: ‘You would be an idiot if you didn’t accept’.” He also highlighted: “We have already achieved everything together and then he receives such a fantastic offer, especially thinking about his family and the security that it would bring.”
Verstappen also revealed that Lambiase sought his approval before accepting the offer. “He asked for my approval, so to speak, and I said he absolutely had to accept. He really wanted to hear that from me,” he said.

After about a decade of partnership, the driver and engineer built a close relationship. After last year’s Abu Dhabi GP, Verstappen said: “I am very happy to be able to work with someone so passionate. Of course, he is my race engineer, but I see him as my friend. We have been through so many exciting things together and fantastic achievements.”
The Dutchman also added: “I’m sure he was a bit emotional after the checkered flag. So, I’m really looking forward to leaving here and meeting him, because it hasn’t always been easy for him. I’m very proud to be able to work with someone so good. A true example of someone who never gave up this season, even in difficult moments.”
