The Audi driver lined up in 14th place in the pack. Throughout the 19 laps in Shanghai, he even appeared in 12th and held off Max Verstappen for a while, but without being able to advance much among his opponents and opting to stay on track during the safety car intervention in the final laps, he finished outside the points zone.

Despite not having placed further ahead, Bortoleto did not seem shaken by the result, showing he was aware of the decisions and reinforcing that the goal now is qualifying for the Formula 1 Chinese GP.

“I think that was it, finishing the race today, we brought the car home, we have an important qualifying ahead. There wasn’t much to do in the race unless we had gone with another tire strategy, which wasn’t the one chosen, we have to focus on tomorrow’s race, but that was it,” he told Guilherme Pereira.

“I think in the race it was what could be done. I stayed more or less where I started, I tried to make some overtakes, at some moments I succeeded, at the end there was a safety car, we chose not to stop to put on new tires and I think it was fine. It’s about focusing today on qualifying and tomorrow which is the big, important race, and taking the lessons we had today in the race, trying to improve a few little things on the car that need to improve for tomorrow and go for it,” he added.
