Fernando Alonso is quite unhappy with the current situation of Aston Martin in Formula 1. In fact, the Spaniard even drew a parallel with the complicated period he faced at McLaren with Honda.

The veteran competitor has been suffering at the start of this 2026 season. At the Australian GP, he couldn’t even finish the race due to the large vibrations in the AMR26 chassis, which could cause permanent damage to the nerves in his hand.

Therefore, when asked if there is any difference between what he went through with McLaren and what he is facing now, he highlighted the divergent points.

“I think now I can see things from a different perspective and with a different maturity, but I don’t think ten years ago things were, again, so dramatic,” Alonso explained.

“This is Formula 1, a very media-centric sport. When you win a few championships just competing against your teammate, you are a God, and then, when you are struggling and going through a difficult period, everything is amplified as well,” he added.

“In a way, ten years later, some things people thought about me back then… maybe they have changed their minds and now think I was right ten years ago,” he said.

“For me, the biggest surprise in these last few years was thinking that, ten years ago, at McLaren, Stoffel [Vandoorne], Jenson [Button] and I — because people always seem to remember only Fernando, but I think Jenson, Stoffel and McLaren were saying the same thing — that project, the power unit, was not mature enough when we started, something that everyone seems to understand now,” he concluded.
