The grid for the 2027 season has already been defined with several names renewed and confirmed. However, there is still uncertainty about some competitors who have not defined their future – Fernando Alonso is among them.

Russell is one of those drivers who has not made an official announcement about his life beyond 2026 in F1. But the Austrian Mercedes executive has already confirmed that the renewal was done, only no statement was made about it.
“That has already happened. We simply have not issued an important official statement. Actually, there is nothing more to add,” he told the österreich newspaper.

In 2026, Russell started as the big favorite for the title, but after 14 rounds, he has been overshadowed by his teammate Kimi Antonelli, who is already 81 points ahead of the Briton. Despite the scenario, Wolff showed confidence in the Briton.

“George was unlucky with the timing of the virtual safety car in Madrid. He is also going through an important phase of development. He sees adapting to the new situation as a challenge,” he said.
“If he manages that, he can also compete for the World Championship. He is among the best,” he concluded.
