The debut of the new Madrid circuit brings a combination of opportunity and risk for McLaren. The team considers the behavior of the tires on the new asphalt as the main unknown for the upcoming weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix of Formula 1.

According to Mark Temple, McLaren’s performance technical director, the team arrives at the new layout with data obtained from simulators about the track, energy usage, and aerodynamic demands. However, understanding the level of grip and the asphalt conditions during FP1 will be crucial to define the next steps.
“The biggest variable factor remains the behavior of the tires on this new asphalt. Understanding the track grip and surface conditions during Friday’s free practice will be vital to define the rest of our weekend,” said Temple.

The circuit will also demand specific characteristics from the car, especially in low-speed zones. Temple highlighted the need for stability under braking, including during corners, as well as precision to attack the curbs, while some high-speed corners will also play an important role in performance.
McLaren will continue working on aerodynamic and mechanical developments of the MCL40, but Temple emphasized that the differences between the main teams remain small. For the director, the ability to adapt will be decisive on a new track, aiming to gradually increase confidence and performance throughout each session to arrive on Sunday in a position to seek the best possible result.
