The opening of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Australian GP ended in a frustrating way for Oscar Piastri. The McLaren driver retired from the race even before the start after crashing on the way to the grid, in front of thousands of fans who packed the Albert Park circuit to support him.

About half a million spectators were present at the Melbourne circuit, with a large part of the grandstands dressed in orange to cheer for the Australian driver. However, the fans’ expectations quickly turned into disappointment when the McLaren car appeared stopped on the track, damaged after the impact against the barriers.
The retirement marked another episode of bad luck for Piastri racing at home. For the second consecutive season, the driver saw his chances of a great result at the Australian GP disappear even before the race began.
After the incident, the Australian made a direct assessment of what happened and took responsibility for the mistake. According to him, several factors contributed to the loss of control of the car at that moment.
“I am very disappointed. A situation like this simply shouldn’t happen,” Piastri stated after the episode.
The driver explained that he still had cold tires while heading to the starting grid, which contributed to the loss of control of the car. According to him, everything happened extremely quickly, with no time to react.
“We had a few things going on, but the first thing I want to make clear is that a large part of it was my fault. I was on cold tires,” he said.
According to the Australian, the car spun even before he could try to correct the situation. “It was a shock. I was already spinning before I could even react. Everything happened very fast,” he explained.
Piastri also highlighted that he was using a kerb that he had used all weekend, but that at that moment it wasn’t necessary to take a risk like that.

“I used that corner exit on every lap of the weekend, but at that moment I didn’t need to do that,” he stated.
In addition to the cold tires, the driver revealed that he received an extra delivery of power from the car’s energy system at that moment. According to him, the unexpected increase of about 100 kilowatts contributed to making the situation even more difficult to control.
“At the same time, I had about 100 extra kilowatts of power that I didn’t expect. That’s not a small thing,” he explained.
Even mentioning this factor, Piastri recognized that the car was working normally and that the situation is linked to how the engines operate under the current Formula 1 rules.
For the driver, this detail made the incident even more frustrating. “That’s the hard part to accept. In some ways it would be easier to just say the tires were cold and I was too optimistic, but when you add another factor like that, it becomes even more painful.”
In the end, the Australian apologized to the fans who went to the circuit to support him. “I really don’t have many other words. I can only apologize to everyone who came here to support me,” he said.
“Clearly this wasn’t how I wanted to start the year,” the McLaren driver concluded.
