On this Friday (4), the FIA International Court of Appeal ruled in favor of McLaren and Red Bull and reinstated the two five-second penalties applied to Pierre Gasly for speeding in the pit lane at the 2026 Monaco GP of Formula 1.

With the 10 seconds again valid, the Alpine driver lost third place and dropped to seventh position. Isack Hadjar returns to the podium, in third, securing his first top-three finish for Red Bull. Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad also moved up to fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
The case was analyzed in a hearing held in Paris on August 25. McLaren and Red Bull appealed decisions 1 and 2 of document 99 of the Monaco GP, which had annulled Gasly’s penalties after a review request from Alpine.
The review found that the official timing had incorrectly measured the length of the pit lane. Since the limit was 60 km/h, the error could cause drivers to be penalized even without exceeding the allowed speed.

The information was not available to the stewards when Gasly was penalized and, therefore, was considered “relevant, significant, and new,” allowing the penalties to be reviewed.
Gasly was not the only one penalized. Franco Colapinto, Oscar Piastri, and George Russell also received five seconds. Piastri served his penalty during the race, while Russell tried to serve his but ended up receiving a drive-through penalty and finished 12th.
Since these penalties had already been served, McLaren and Mercedes could not remove them after the race, as F1 regulations do not provide a mechanism to erase the effects of a penalty already served. In Gasly’s case, however, the 10 seconds had not yet been served and could be annulled after the Court’s decision.
