Ayumu Iwasa will participate in the first free practice of the Italian GP of Formula 1 this weekend, taking over Max Verstappen’s car. This will be his third appearance in a FP1 in 2026.

The Japanese driver acts as a reserve driver for both Red Bull and Racing Bulls, and has already completed 21 laps at the Spanish GP, finishing the session in 14th place on the table. He also drove the VCARB03 in Austria, being 15th after 19 laps.


Iwasa has been a regular presence in free practice sessions since his debut at the 2024 Japanese GP, when he drove Daniel Ricciardo’s car at Racing Bulls – forming an all-Japanese duo alongside Yuki Tsunoda.

He also drove in the FP1 sessions of Abu Dhabi in 2024 and the Bahrain GP in 2025. In the same year, he also drove at the Mexican GP.
