Haas has opened a competition for a Formula 1 seat for 2027, with Leonardo Fornaroli and Rafael Câmara among the drivers who will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in Portugal. The move may indicate an important change in the team’s lineup for the next season.

The team rented the Portimão circuit from Wednesday to Friday to conduct tests as part of the ‘Testing of Previous Cars’ (TPC) program. Besides Fornaroli, McLaren’s reserve driver, and Câmara, who is part of Ferrari’s young driver program, Ryo Hirakawa is also expected to participate in the activities.
Câmara’s presence is especially relevant. The Brazilian, who currently competes in Formula 2, has strong support from Ferrari, and the head of the Italian team, Fred Vasseur, confirmed his involvement in the test: “Haas is our partner, and together, we are trying to find the best way to get him (Câmara) into Formula 1 next year,” Vasseur said.
The manager also explained the work done by Ferrari to prepare Câmara: “We support Rafa a lot. It’s not just financial support. We provide that financial support, but we have also done many TPC tests with him this year. The costs of these tests are often higher than the financial support. We are doing this to prepare him as best as possible for next week’s test and for the next season,” he added.

The move in Portimão may have a direct impact on Esteban Ocon. Although the Frenchman hopes to renew with Haas, paddock information points to a possible departure, while the team intends to keep Oliver Bearman, who also belongs to Ferrari’s structure and could remain on loan for another year.
With few seats available for 2027 and many drivers seeking space, Haas is in a favorable position to choose. The scenario increases the importance of the tests in Portugal and may allow the team to find a driver considered stronger than would normally be possible in such a restricted market.
