Former Alpine Formula 1 team principal Otmar Szafnauer revealed how he warned colleagues when he was being recorded for Netflix’s Drive to Survive documentary.

In an interview with the High Performance Racing podcast, Szafnauer said he would put a piece of tape on his forehead with the word “Netflix” whenever he wore a microphone on the pit wall.
“I’ll tell you what I used to do whenever I had a microphone and was on the pit wall. You could say all kinds of things because the emotions were very intense and they recorded everything. I used to put a piece of tape on my forehead with the words ‘Netflix’. So, whenever someone talked to me, they could see I was wearing a microphone.”

According to Szafnauer, he did not use the microphone all the time. The equipment was mainly necessary when his team was the focus of a particular episode: “Exactly. Well, when we are the story, I would have the microphone and then I would have the microphone on the grid,” he said.
Although he acknowledged that Drive to Survive brought new fans to Formula 1, the former team principal also highlighted the teams’ concern about strategic information. “There are still some strategic things you do on the pit wall that you don’t want them to know,” Szafnauer revealed.
