Liam Lawson changed the way he sees his future in Formula 1, after the brief stint with Red Bull Racing at the beginning of 2025. The New Zealander is still aiming to get ahead and win in the category, but he no longer associates this goal exclusively with Max Verstappen’s team.

The change in thinking came after Lawson was promoted from Racing Bulls to Red Bull in 2025 and stayed only for the first two rounds alongside Verstappen, before returning to the previous team in a swap with Yuki Tsunoda. Since then, the driver has broadened his perspective on the paths that can lead him to the top.
This year helped change that scenario. Lawson is in ninth place in the drivers’ championship, with 43 points after eleven rounds, having scored points in eight race weekends and twice achieving the best result of his career, with sixth places in Monaco and Silverstone.
When he joined Red Bull’s young driver program, Lawson had a very clear goal: “I think my mindset used to be, obviously, very specific, to get into the Red Bull ‘family’ and try to reach the main team,” said the 24-year-old driver to PlanetF1.

The promotion to Red Bull Racing was precisely the path Lawson had pursued since his teenage years, going through the junior categories with Red Bull’s support, until securing a spot in the main team. The experience, however, lasted only two races and changed his perception of the future.
“But I think now, honestly, it’s not specific. Like everyone, I’m working to be at the front and win in Formula 1, and where that will be, I have no idea. And I’m not too worried about that, but that’s what I’m working on,” he added.
