Max Verstappen is experiencing a moment of uncertainty in Formula 1, according to Ralf Schumacher’s assessment. The former driver of the category believes that ‘something has broken’ in the relationship between the four-time world champion and Red Bull Racing, casting doubt on the Dutchman’s continuation with the team.

Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, but there are speculations about performance clauses that could allow an early exit. Although staying next year is still considered the most likely scenario, McLaren appears among the alternatives mentioned for the future of the Dutch driver.
Schumacher also linked market movements to Carlos Sainz’s situation at Williams. The German told German Sky that he is curious about the Spaniard’s future and raised possibilities involving Verstappen, Oscar Piastri, and a possible move of Sainz to Audi: “He seems to have declined an offer from Williams. Does this have any relation to the fact that Max Verstappen might leave Red Bull? Oscar Piastri lost part of his status. Or maybe Sainz is going to Audi?”, he questioned.
For Schumacher, the problems at Williams also help illustrate the current instability on the grid. He criticized the British team’s work with the car and stated that the team principal, James Vowles, apparently failed to organize the project as needed under the new regulations, in addition to pointing out the existence of internal frictions.

About Verstappen, the former driver highlighted that the relationship with Red Bull no longer seems the same: “Something has broken between Verstappen and Red Bull. The ongoing discussion about his future ends up being exhausting for the team as well,” he added.
Schumacher continued, saying that the car’s performance could be decisive for a decision: “The team also did not deliver. The Red Bull car was particularly bad at the start of the season, although the update helped a bit. But the car is very difficult to drive,” he concluded.
At the same time, Verstappen still feels comfortable at Red Bull, while the possibility of competing for McLaren gains strength due to Lando Norris’s performance. For Schumacher, it remains to be seen whether the Dutchman has lost confidence in Red Bull’s ability to react or considers that the restructuring is taking too long.
