Williams is sacrificing part of the development of the 2026 car to fix structural problems that have accumulated over the years. The team principal, James Vowles, revealed that the Formula 1 financial cap limits the resources available to tackle both fronts simultaneously.

The start of the current season exposed the team’s difficulties, which began 2026 with an overweight car and behind schedule. According to Vowles, the deficiencies in Grove’s infrastructure are so great that modernizing the facilities has become a priority, even with a direct impact on current performance.
“We are in a strange position where we are very exposed. We spent many years unable to develop our facilities to the necessary level. And what the spending cap does is limit you,” Vowles said on The Vowles Verdict program, after the Hungarian GP.
The executive confirmed that Williams is directing resources to solve these internal problems, instead of focusing them on immediate upgrades for the car: “We are dedicating many resources to ensure we are fixing these issues behind the scenes, rather than bringing performance to the car in the current year,” he said.

Vowles acknowledged that the work will be time-consuming and that the problems revealed in the first part of the season are far from a quick fix: “There is much more we need to address and fix. And it is not a moment’s work. It’s not something for one or two months. It will take time to get there,” he added, assuring that the team will continue advancing in this process.
The choice also has repercussions on the 2026 results. At the Hungarian GP, Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz finished 17th and 18th, respectively, both two laps behind the winner, while Williams occupies ninth place in the constructors’ championship after the first half of the season, with only eleven points scored.
