Kimi Antonelli’s lead in the drivers’ standings in the 2026 Formula 1 season, before the August break, surprised even the driver himself. The Italian stated that he did not imagine being in first place in the championship at this point in the season, although he highlighted the performance of Mercedes and the work done by the team.

This advantage built over the first half of the season put Antonelli in a comfortable position in the standings, but the driver made it clear that he considers the battle far from decided. According to him, there is still a lot of work ahead and the focus remains on maintaining the pace for the rest of the year.
The Mercedes driver’s campaign began with a second place at the Australian GP, behind George Russell. Following that, Antonelli won five consecutive GPs and consolidated his title bid. Car problems compromised his results at the Barcelona GP and the British GP, but he responded with a victory at Spa-Francorchamps and another podium at the Hungarian GP.
With these results, Antonelli reached the mid-season break with 219 points. The lead is 50 points over Lewis Hamilton, second with 169, while his teammate, George Russell, is third with 160. Charles Leclerc occupies fourth place, totaling 138 points.

Reflecting on the season so far, Antonelli acknowledged that the scenario exceeded his expectations: “Certainly, I did not expect to find myself in this position. But the car has been extremely good, the team has done an incredible job, and on my part, I try to make the most of every opportunity I have,” he said.
The Italian also highlighted that there is still room for improvement before the championship ends: “Of course, there is still a lot of work to do and much to learn, but it was a good first half of the season. Now I am looking forward to the second half and we will keep pushing,” he added.
