George Russell had a frustrating end to qualifying for the Formula 1 Hungarian GP. Immediately after the end of Q3, the Mercedes driver was forced to stop the W17 in the run-off area of Turn 1 due to a technical problem, ending his participation prematurely.

The Briton had already faced difficulties throughout the session and secured only seventh position on the starting grid. Meanwhile, his teammate and championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, achieved the fourth best time.
In the final attempt, Russell was also hampered by Max Verstappen’s spin in the last corner of the circuit. The incident caused yellow flags, forcing the Mercedes driver to slow down and preventing any chance of improving his lap.

Shortly after receiving the checkered flag, Russell had to park the car in the run-off area of Turn 1 and leave the cockpit. In the fight for pole position, Lando Norris beat Lewis Hamilton by just 0.012s and secured his first pole of the season.
Subsequently, it was confirmed that the problem with the Mercedes was caused by a loss of pressure in the W17’s water system.
