Toto Wolff stated that Mercedes can no longer afford to waste points in the fight for the Formula 1 titles. The team principal highlighted that reliability issues have compromised the results and warned about Ferrari closing the gap, which reduced the difference after a performance above expectations at the British GP.

After nine rounds, the German team leads the Constructors’ Championship with 333 points, 78 ahead of the Italian rival. However, the team has missed important results throughout the season. George Russell retired while leading the Canadian GP, while Kimi Antonelli lost second place at the Spanish GP due to a battery failure. At Silverstone, the Italian also saw a failure in the wheel protector end his race while chasing Charles Leclerc in the final laps.
In the Austrian chief’s assessment, Mercedes has already shown it has the performance to fight for wins in F1 in 2026, but needs to turn that potential into results. “The last races have shown both where our strengths are and where we need to improve. We have a car capable of fighting at the front and scoring many points, but we have not turned that potential into the best possible results. Reliability issues have cost us points and, in such a competitive championship, that is something we cannot afford to accept,” he said.

“It’s no use having pace if we don’t bring the result home. Spa is one of the big challenges on the calendar. Our goal is to execute everything in the best way, ensure the reliability we need, and turn the car’s performance into the number of points it is capable of scoring.”
“We have left too many points on the way recently. We need to ensure that this does not happen again from this weekend onwards. Just like at Silverstone, energy management will be very important, but the characteristics of the circuit bring different demands. It is usually a track that provides good races and real overtaking opportunities, while qualifying remains a big challenge. This is the last double-header before the summer break and we want to enter this period in a stronger position.”
