Mercedes arrives at the Australian GP determined to play a prominent role in the opening of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Before the stage in Melbourne, team principal Toto Wolff made it clear that the goal is to quickly understand the true competitive level of the W17 and fight for the top positions.

The executive stated that the testing phase brought positive indications, but also exposed limitations that need to be corrected: “We identified encouraging signs, but also several areas that are not yet where they need to be,” he said.
Wolff explained that the pre-season usually generates more questions than definitive answers: “Testing is behind us. They offered glimpses, but as always, many more questions than answers, but that is the nature of our sport, as every weakness is an opportunity waiting to be unlocked.”
Regarding the new car, the Mercedes boss highlighted that there is room for growth, but reinforced that only on-track performance will show the reality: “The W17 has potential, but the stopwatch never lies. Melbourne will give us the first real indication of where we are and that is intriguing, but at the same time keeps us humble,” he said.

The race at the Albert Park Circuit will also be important for evaluating the impact of the new rules. Wolff pondered that the championship hierarchy should not become clear immediately: “It will take a few races until the competitive order is established. Albert Park is a circuit that requires low energy, so system usage and strategic discipline will play a relevant role. The new regulations add another layer of complexity and will reshape the grid dynamics as teams adapt,” he added.
Finally, the Austrian recalled that Formula 1 is starting a new technical cycle: “We are at the beginning of a new era for the sport, full of opportunities and built from a position of strength. There has been a lot of talk so far, but that can stop now and we can race. Let’s see how the initial landscape takes shape,” concluded the Mercedes boss.
With this, Mercedes starts the season aware of the challenges, but with the declared ambition of being among the protagonists from the first green lights of 2026.
