Max Verstappen stated that Red Bull will face its “real test” when using its own power unit, developed in-house with Ford’s support, for the first time on the grid during the Australian GP this weekend. The round marks the opening of the 2026 Formula 1 championship, which will be the stage for the largest regulation overhaul ever made in the category.

The Austrian team’s engine drew attention in the pre-season tests in February for its reliability and energy management efficiency. The unit will also be used by Isack Hadjar, Verstappen’s new teammate, and by the Racing Bulls duo, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad.
“It will be great to get back on track and start the season, it feels like there has been a long build-up to this moment, and it’s exciting to finally be racing again,” said Verstappen. He recalled the experience in Bahrain: “Seeing the car with our own power unit complete so many laps was very impressive; the team did a great job.”

The Dutchman highlighted the Melbourne challenge: “Now is the real test. I don’t know how everything will unfold, but we have been learning a lot and working to optimize the car. This track has great memories for me, but this year will be particularly exciting.”
