George Russell enters his fifth year as a Mercedes driver with high expectations of winning his first Formula 1 title, driven by the new power unit rules that could favor strategic drivers and seem to favor the engine developed by the German manufacturer.

The W17, the team’s car for 2026, is considered a strong championship contender, following the team’s history of adapting quickly to regulatory changes, as happened in 2014. In pre-season testing, Russell completed 688 laps — the highest number among all drivers.
James Hinchcliffe, former IndyCar driver and F1 commentator, highlighted Russell’s ability to extract the maximum from the car even when it wasn’t competitive: “There were some weekends where Mercedes really wasn’t up to par… but George was getting everything he could out of the car. He delivered and behaved like a championship-level driver. Drivers like him are going to have a certain advantage with this new set of rules… and that puts him in a great position to fight for this championship.”

Commentator Jolyon Palmer recalled Russell’s performance at the 2025 Bahrain GP, when the Briton overcame car failures and beat Lando Norris to finish in second place, behind only Oscar Piastri: “It’s the season of the thinking drivers… If you have a bit more reserve to think about strategy, recharging, and overtaking, it’s going to yield a lot of points. George is a champion in the making, and this could be his year.”
Russell’s first challenge takes place this weekend with the F1 Australian GP. The event, which will be held between March 5 and 8, will have real-time coverage from F1MANIA.NET.
