This signing comes at a time when technology has taken on an increasingly important role within the category. For the team principal, James Vowles, the ability to efficiently use data and artificial intelligence has become one of the main areas of competition among teams.
Smith arrives at Williams bringing more than a decade of experience in companies linked to technological innovation. The executive worked for ten years at Google and DeepMind, participating in the development of the Android data platform, used by more than three thousand engineers and responsible for assisting performance decisions on about three billion devices.
In addition to his time at the tech giants, he was also co-founder of Human Native AI. According to Williams, his career includes building high-performance teams, implementing large-scale artificial intelligence solutions, and leading organizations through complex technological transformation processes.
Commenting on this signing, Vowles highlighted the growing importance of technology within Formula 1: “Success in Formula 1 has always been linked to the combination of technological innovation and the best people to deliver performance on the track,” he said.

The executive highlighted that the rapid pace of technological evolution is changing the way teams operate: “With technology evolving at an impressive speed, the latest battle in Formula 1 is the ability to leverage data and artificial intelligence across all areas of the team. James has spent his career right on this frontier, at Google, DeepMind, and building his own company. I am very happy to welcome him to the Atlassian Williams F1 Team as we continue to put technology at the center of our ambitions to compete at the front,” said Vowles.
The new director also highlighted the moment the team is experiencing and the potential of the role he will assume: “I am excited to join the Atlassian Williams F1 Team at a time when data and artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly important for performance both on and off the track,” he commented.
Smith stated that Williams’ tradition was an important factor in his decision but emphasized mainly the team’s goals for the future: “Williams has an exceptional history, but what attracts me most is the ambition for the next phase, to build systems, products, and a culture capable of competing at the front of the starting grid. I hope to bring my experience from Google, DeepMind, and Human Native to help the team act quickly, use artificial intelligence practically, and turn complex ideas into concrete advantages,” he added.
