Carlos Sainz’s choice of Williams over Audi continues to generate repercussions in Formula 1. Audi director Mattia Binotto revealed details of the conversations with the Spaniard and stated that the driver’s decision even went against the preference of his father, Carlos Sainz Sr.

When Ferrari announced in 2024 that Lewis Hamilton would take Sainz’s place from 2025 in the Italian team, the Spaniard became one of the most sought-after pieces in the driver market. At the time, many pointed to the future Audi team as the natural destination for Sainz, since the German manufacturer was preparing its official entry into the category for 2026 through the acquisition of Sauber.
The connection between the parties seemed even stronger due to the influence of Carlos Sainz Sr. The two-time Dakar champion with Audi was known for advocating his son’s move to the German project before the brand’s debut in Formula 1.
Even so, Sainz chose to sign a long-term contract with Williams. In a participation in the official F1 podcast, Beyond The Grid, Binotto stated that he respected the Spaniard’s decision and denied any feeling of frustration over the outcome of the negotiations: “Obviously, we had a good relationship at Ferrari. I was the one who hired him for Ferrari, so he knew I trusted him as much as I continue to trust him today,” said the Italian director.
Binotto explained that the conversations between the two were positive and that the driver considered the possibility of joining Audi. Still, the team director emphasized that the final choice belonged exclusively to the Spaniard: “It was good to meet him and talk to him. He evaluated the situation, but as happens with anyone, I always respect others’ decisions. If he decided to take a different path, I am happy for him.”

The director then made a curious observation about the family influence on the decision: “Honestly, I think he made his own choice, and that was important. I would even say he made his own choice, not his father’s choice, which is great for him,” he added.
Binotto also expressed satisfaction with the direction taken by Audi after Sainz’s refusal: “On the other hand, we had the opportunity to count on Gabriel Bortoleto, which makes me very happy,” concluded the Italian.
The statements come at a time when rumors are again surrounding the future of Williams drivers. However, according to team principal James Vowles, both Sainz and his teammate, Alex Albon, remain committed to the project. According to the director, both want to be part of the team’s evolution and remain focused on Williams’ growth journey.
