BYD will hold meetings with category leaders during the Monaco GP weekend, in a move that could help define its strategy to enter the world’s premier motorsport championship.

The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer’s interest in F1 is not new. In recent months, BYD executives have been exploring different possibilities for involvement with the category, driven by the global growth of Formula 1 and the platform’s potential as a marketing and brand-strengthening tool.

The main representative of the manufacturer in this process is Stella Li, the company’s executive vice president responsible for brand operations in the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. A proponent of BYD’s entry into the F1 world, she will be present in the Monte Carlo paddock for a series of meetings with championship representatives.

Despite the speculation that has gained momentum recently, there is no defined direction yet. Among the alternatives being considered by the company are the purchase of an already established team on the grid, the creation of a new operation, a long-term sponsorship agreement with a team, or even a direct partnership with Formula 1 at a global level.

The most recent rumors pointed to a possible interest in acquiring an existing team. The name Alpine was mentioned behind the scenes, especially in a scenario that could involve Christian Horner, former Red Bull team principal. However, recent changes in the French team’s ownership structure have made this hypothesis less likely.

Another organization mentioned was Racing Bulls. But the team still maintains a significant operational link with Red Bull’s structure in Milton Keynes, a factor that would make any potential independence process more complex for a new owner.

Besides the sporting and operational challenges, there is an increasingly relevant financial barrier. The value of Formula 1 teams has grown significantly in recent years, driven by the commercial expansion of the category. According to information circulating in the paddock, some offers exceeding US$ 2 billion have recently been made to grid teams, without success.

The perception among current owners is that Formula 1 franchises can still appreciate even more in the coming years, reducing willingness to negotiate sales at this time.

The alternative of creating a new team also faces important obstacles. The process that led to Cadillac’s entry demonstrated the complexity of the operation, which requires approval from the FIA and Formula 1, as well as a robust technical structure and strategic partnerships to make the project viable in the first years.

Although BYD has the financial capacity to undertake a program of this magnitude, paddock sources indicate that there is no concrete plan defined yet. For now, the meeting in Monaco is seen as a stage of evaluation and understanding of the category’s scenario.

The meeting may provide clearer indications about the Chinese manufacturer’s future in Formula 1. At this moment, BYD’s possible entry remains in the realm of strategic discussions, with no official announcement or project underway.
