George Russell received a penalty from the FIA after retiring from the 2026 Canadian Formula 1 GP. The Mercedes driver was fined for throwing the car’s headrest onto the track after leaving the cockpit at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The Briton was engaged in an intense battle for the lead with teammate Kimi Antonelli as the race approached halfway. However, Russell locked up his tires, went off onto the grass, and ended up retiring shortly after, while Antonelli extended his lead at the front.
The frustration was evident immediately after the car stopped. Russell threw the headrest onto the track before moving behind the safety barriers. The retirement also had a direct impact on the championship fight, as the potential 11-point gap to Antonelli increased to 43.
Called by the stewards, Russell admitted he overreacted and showed remorse for his behavior. The FIA imposed a €5,000 fine, suspended for 12 months, provided there is no recurrence of a similar situation during this period.

In the official document, the stewards highlighted that the driver acknowledged the mistake and apologized. “The driver explained that he was extremely frustrated for not finishing the race and expressed embarrassment for what happened afterward,” stated the FIA.
The statement also informed that Russell admitted his attitude “was not a good example” and made himself available to apologize publicly. The stewards accepted the Mercedes driver’s explanations, closing the case with only the suspended financial penalty.
