Lando Norris, drivers’ champion, and his McLaren team, constructors’ champion in Formula 1 in 2025, are in contention for a major award granted by Laureus. Norris was nominated for the ‘World Breakthrough Star of the Year’ award, following his F1 World Championship win, which culminated in an exciting decision in Abu Dhabi, where he beat four-time champion Max Verstappen by just two points.

The British driver, who won his first title in the category, will compete for the award against prominent names from other sports, such as footballer Desire Doue, tennis player João Fonseca, Canadian basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, world darts champion Luke Littler, and swimmer Zidi Yu.
Additionally, McLaren, which secured the constructors’ title for the second consecutive time in 2025, was nominated for the ‘World Team of the Year’ award. The team will face competition from other prominent teams, such as the England women’s national football team, Euro champions, the European Ryder Cup team, the Indian women’s cricket World Cup winning team, the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team, and Paris Saint-Germain, winners of the UEFA Champions League for the first time.

Although no F1 driver was nominated for the ‘World Sportsman of the Year’ award, MotoGP champion Marc Marquez is one of the finalists. Marquez, who overcame several injuries after some accidents, dominated the 2025 season, winning his seventh title in the premier class.
The awards ceremony will be held in Madrid on April 20, where the winners will be announced. The presence of Norris and McLaren in the nominations confirms the success of their motorsport campaigns in 2025 and further reinforces Formula 1’s growing impact on the global sporting stage.
