The fight for the Formula 1 title in 2026 is still far from decided, but Kimi Antonelli is already one of the main names of the season. At 19 years old, the Mercedes driver has accumulated three consecutive wins and opened a 20-point lead over his teammate, George Russell, in the first four stages of the championship.

Even with the dominant start, Antonelli avoids treating the championship fight as a priority at this moment. The Italian highlighted that the season will still have many challenges and stated that his focus remains on performance race after race: “I am aware of what is happening, but I am not trying to focus too much on it or worry,” said the young driver. “In the end, the season is still very long, with many races ahead. And I know that, on my part, I need to keep raising the level.”
The young driver’s performance has increased the expectations of Italian fans, who dream of seeing a representative of the country return to the top of F1 after more than seven decades. If he wins the championship, Antonelli will become the third Italian world champion in the category, repeating the feats of Giuseppe Farina and Alberto Ascari. The last Italian title in F1 was won by Ascari in 1953.
Despite the growing pressure and support coming from his home country, the Mercedes driver downplayed the responsibility around his name. According to Antonelli, the main goal is to maintain progress throughout the season and continue delivering consistent results. “I have a super strong teammate, George, who is very fast and complete. And the competitors will get closer and closer.”

“On my part, I know the road is still very long and, as I said before, I need to keep raising the level, delivering results and focusing on the process, trying to maximize performance each time,” added Antonelli. “On my part, I have to be ready because, as I said before, it won’t be easy and it will be important to try to maintain or increase the level.”
Antonelli leads the championship with 100 points earned and will try to increase the lead this weekend, between May 22 and 24, at the Canadian GP.
