Andrea Kimi Antonelli is having a meteoric start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, but former driver Emerson Fittipaldi believes Mercedes will need to act carefully to protect the young Italian from the growing pressure. The two-time F1 champion highlighted that the full support of the team will be decisive for the driver to sustain the championship fight.

The young Italian took over the cockpit that belonged to Lewis Hamilton and had a somewhat unstable first season in 2025, but quickly became a protagonist in the 2026 season. The Mercedes driver leads the championship with a twenty-point advantage over his teammate, George Russell, after a streak of three wins and three consecutive poles, something unprecedented in the history of the category.
This performance by Antonelli completely changed the perception within the paddock. After a debut year marked by mistakes and adaptation, Antonelli began to show confidence, aggressiveness, and maturity, characteristics that further increased the pressure around his name, especially from the Italian press.
Fittipaldi stated on the official F1 podcast, Beyond The Grid, that internal support from Mercedes will be essential for Antonelli to handle this new scenario: “One of the most important things is to have the support of the team. If Antonelli has the full support of Mercedes and Toto Wolff, he can succeed,” said the Brazilian.
The former driver related the Italian’s situation to his own experience at Lotus in 1970, when he took on a leadership role very young after the death of Jochen Rindt. According to Fittipaldi, the confidence received from the late Colin Chapman, former owner of the British team, was decisive to mentally endure that moment in his career.

“When you are young, you don’t have much experience, and that support takes away the pressure. It helps a lot,” he said. For the Brazilian, the biggest challenge for Mercedes at this moment will be managing the internal team environment in the face of the direct competition between Antonelli and Russell.
On the other side of the garage, George Russell sees the season as his big opportunity to fight for the title. After years of waiting for a competitive car, the Brit now shares space with a teammate who is only nineteen years old and has quickly taken the lead within the German team.
Fittipaldi believes the pressure on Antonelli will only increase as results come in: “He needs to feel that everyone around him supports him. That removes tremendous pressure,” he added.
The Brazilian also issued a warning about the unpredictable nature of Formula 1: “You never know if this opportunity will come back. F1 history is full of drivers who could have been champions and never had that chance again,” he concluded.
