Formula 1 has lost one of its most remarkable stories. Alex Zanardi died at the age of 59, his family announced this Saturday.

The Italian built a unique path in the sport, marked by overcoming challenges both on and off the track. From F1 driver to multi-paralympic champion, his career inspired generations and transcended the limits of motorsport.
Zanardi competed in 41 GPs between 1991 and 1999, racing for teams such as Jordan, Minardi, Lotus, and Williams. After his first stint in the category, he shone in the United States by winning two CART titles with Chip Ganassi, including a dominant season in 1998.
The return to F1 in 1999, with Williams, was not as successful, and he left the category without scoring points. In 2001, during a race in Germany, he suffered a serious accident that resulted in the amputation of both legs, as well as severe injuries.

Despite the difficulties, Zanardi returned to compete. He participated in touring car races, completed the remaining laps of the 2001 race in 2003, and even drove an F1 car again in 2006. In 2019, he still competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona with an adapted car.
Off the track, he achieved historic feats in para-cycling. He won four gold medals at the Paralympic Games, in London 2012 and Rio 2016, in addition to accumulating 12 world titles. The family stated in a communiqué: “Alex passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family,” asking for respect during this time of mourning.
Zanardi was not just a former Formula 1 driver, but a global symbol of resilience and determination.
