Former category driver, David Coulthard, described the decision as an ‘own goal’, raising doubts about the engineer’s adaptation to the role. The assessment comes amidst a complicated start to the season, marked by reliability issues linked to Honda’s return as a power unit supplier.

Coulthard, who worked with the engineer and renowned designer throughout his career, was direct in analyzing the Briton’s profile: “I never saw him as a team principal. He is driven by the technical side, he is a problem solver in that aspect,” he stated. For him, the political side of the role does not match Newey’s characteristics.
The former driver also questioned the long-term strategy advocated by Aston Martin owner, Lawrence Stroll: “This ended up becoming a communication error, because it raised doubts about something many already thought wouldn’t work,” Coulthard concluded, reinforcing the view that this decision may not bring the expected results.
